Vantage vs Narrative Select: automation versus assisted judgement
These two tools disagree about something fundamental, which makes the comparison more interesting than a feature table. Narrative Select is designed to make you cull faster. Vantage is designed to cull first and have you check the result. Neither is the correct answer in general; one of them is probably the correct answer for you.

Choose Narrative Select if…
- You shoot people. Its whole design centres on the judgements that matter on faces — who blinked, who's sharp, which frame in the burst has the expression. That's not what Vantage is trained on.
- You want to keep making every call. If handing selection to software feels like giving away the craft, Narrative's approach respects that while still making you much faster.
- You want a mature, focused tool. It does one job and has been doing it for a while.
Choose Vantage if…
- Your problem is volume of near-identical frames. Forty versions of the same walkaround angle, or two thousand panning shots. Assisted human review still means reviewing all of them; the grouping is what saves the evening.
- You shoot cars. Subject-based sharpness that doesn't punish a good pan, walkaround grouping, plate detection with per-photo blur.
- You want the job finished, not just culled. Grade and gallery in the same subscription.
- You're happy being early. Beta means rough edges and it means influence.
The honest test
Take one real shoot. Cull it in both. Then ask yourself which fatigue you’d rather have: the fatigue of making four hundred fast decisions yourself, or the fatigue of checking eighty decisions somebody else made.
People genuinely differ on this, and it doesn’t correlate with skill. Some photographers find supervising more tiring than deciding. If that’s you, automation will never feel right no matter how accurate it gets, and Narrative’s approach is built for you.
I have no independent comparison of selection accuracy between these two, and I won’t invent one. On people-heavy work I’d expect Narrative to be stronger, because that’s what it’s for. On car work I’d expect Vantage to be, for the same reason. Test it on your own files — that’s the only benchmark that describes your business.

What's the difference between Narrative Select and Vantage?
Narrative Select is built to make your own culling faster, keeping you in the decision on every frame. Vantage does a first pass and asks you to approve or override it. Narrative centres on people-work; Vantage on automotive.
Which is better for wedding photographers?
Narrative Select, or another people-trained tool. Vantage's strength is automotive and its wedding and portrait handling is at an earlier stage — the app labels it that way rather than pretending otherwise.
Do I have to give up control with AI culling?
No, but you do change what you're doing — from deciding on every frame to checking a shortlist. Some photographers find supervising more tiring than deciding, and for them assisted-review tools are the better fit.
